Writer's Workshop

Picture

Mini-lessons

This segment usually lasts 5-15 minutes, depending on the writing skill being taught. During a mini-lesson, the teacher will explicitly model and teach the focus skill for the week. Some mini-lessons can include:

Independent Writing

During the independent writing segment, students are working on their own pieces of writing and taking them through the writing process. While it is good to know the steps of the writing process, it is equally important to teach students the traits of writing such as voice, content, conventions (grammar), sentence fluency, word choice, and organization.

Sharing

The sharing segment usually lasts 5-10 minutes. Students are encouraged to share a piece they have finished or to share a piece that might be "in progress". Students might share as a whole class or may break out into writing clubs where they can share writing and writing ideas.
